How reading time is calculated
Reading time is the word count divided by the chosen words-per-minute rate. A 1,000-word article at 238 WPM takes approximately four minutes and twelve seconds to read. The tool updates in real time as you paste or type, so you can see the estimate change as your draft grows.
The calculation is based on word count alone. It does not account for images, charts, code blocks, or other non-text content. Medium adds approximately 12 seconds per image when estimating reading time for articles, which is a reasonable convention if your content is image-heavy. For text-only content the word-based estimate is accurate enough for planning purposes.
Reading speed vs speaking time
Silent reading and speaking out loud happen at very different speeds. The average adult reads silently at around 238 words per minute. Speaking the same text out loud takes considerably longer. A natural conversational pace runs around 130 to 150 words per minute. A formal presentation with deliberate pacing and pauses runs around 100 to 120 words per minute. A fast-paced podcast or audio content can reach 160 to 180 words per minute.
This gap is why a five-minute read does not translate to a five-minute speech. A 1,000-word piece takes about four minutes to read silently but closer to seven or eight minutes to deliver in a presentation setting. Blog posts and web articles
The 238 WPM default is appropriate for general web content aimed at adult readers. This is the figure that appears most consistently across reading speed research and is what most content tools use as their baseline. Medium and similar platforms display estimated reading times on articles and use a comparable rate.
Technical and academic content
Technical documentation, research papers, and dense academic text are read significantly more slowly than general prose. Readers pause to process unfamiliar terminology, re-read complex sentences, and check references. A realistic rate for technical content is 100 to 150 WPM. Children’s content and ESL readers
Children read more slowly than adults, particularly younger readers still developing fluency. A realistic range for children aged 8 to 12 is 100 to 150 WPM. Adult readers working in a second language often read at a similar reduced rate depending on their proficiency level. Adjust the WPM slider down when the target audience is not a fluent adult native reader.
Speeches, presentations, and podcasts
For spoken delivery, use the speaking time output rather than the reading time. 130 WPM is appropriate for a formal speech with natural pauses. 150 to 160 WPM works for a conversational podcast or narrated video. 120 WPM or slower suits a keynote with deliberate pacing, audience interaction, or significant pausing between points. Most speakers deliver faster when rehearsing alone than when presenting to an actual audience, so build in a buffer of ten to fifteen percent on whichever estimate you use.

Displaying a reading time estimate at the top of an article sets the reader’s expectation before they commit. Research from the medium.com team found that articles with a reading time displayed had lower bounce rates at certain length ranges, particularly for articles between three and seven minutes. Speechwriters and presenters
Conference slots, TED-style talks, and panel presentations have hard time limits. Writing to a word count target without checking the speaking time equivalent is a common mistake. A fifteen-minute time slot at 130 WPM fits approximately 1,950 words. Writing 2,400 words and assuming you will speak faster to compensate rarely works in practice.
